In 1966, John Bowers and his lifelong friend Peter Hayward founded a manufacturing company, then called B&W Electronics, in Worthing, on the south coast of England. They agreed from the outset to live modestly and plough any profits back into the business to further research into the quest for the perfect loudspeaker…

The M-1 has been engineered with the same design attributes and ethos as B&W’s larger ranges. Perhaps the most striking thing about the M-1 is the weight and strength of its curved aluminium cabinet. This is combined with a strong, glass-loaded ABS front baffle. Together they provide an excellent cabinet: the curved aluminium is stiff and the ABS offers excellent and appropriate damping characteristics. Spec

For smaller rooms, a set-up of five M-1s and an AS1 subwoofer (MT10 System) offers the right balance of power and performance. The AS1 features an 85 watt amplifier and a choice of equalisation to suit the programme and room acoustics. Spec

In a larger room, more bass power will be required, so a sound option to achieve this and at the same time raise the quality stakes, is to bring in the AS2 subwoofer (MT20 System) with its Mica cone driver, 150 watt amplifier and more advanced control functions. Spec

For the ultimate M-1-based home theatre installation (MT30 System) incorporate the visually and acoustically unique PV1 subwoofer, which develops some serious bass power from its 500 watt ICEpower® amplifier and back-to-back drivers. Spec

The FPM4 uses the same Kevlar® cone bass/midrange drivers and Nautilus™ tube-loaded tweeter as the FPM5, but in a shorter enclosure that matches the height of 42-inch plasma screens, yet concedes little in bass extension. Like the FPM5 it's a 2½-way configuration that allows wider dispersion of sound in the midrange; essential when used horizontally as a centre speaker. Spec

With a height to match 50-inch plasma screens, the FPM5 is a 2½-way system featuring a pair of Kevlar® cone bass/midrange drivers, either side of a Nautilus™ tube-loaded tweeter. The 2½-way configuration, where one of the drivers is rolled off above 180Hz, ensures better horizontal dispersion when the speaker is used as a centre channel, enabling you to hear that all-important dialogue wherever you sit. Spec

With an enclosure height to match the height of 60-inch plasma screens, the FPM6 is the largest model in the FPM Series. Compared to the other models, its enclosure is not only longer, it's wider too, which allows the use of two larger Kevlar® cone bass/midrange drivers each side of the Nautilus™ tube-loaded tweeter. Higher output level capability and greater bass extension result, but timbre matching allows complete freedom to mix different models for left and right front, centre and surround if desired. Spec
